About Community Development
Is women’s activism in the UK enough to make women effective community Development leaders?
Can anyone help me answer this please!!!
Got to write lots about it & I have a bit of a block right now!
Dr Phil, You are plagarising Doc Phils name aren’t you!! Haha! I want different views like the one about Sharia law – thank you – I never thought of that!!!!
Louisebro, yes! very informative.
Perhaps, it would be helpful to place your question into a context. The assertion behind it is that women as yet have not been effective community leaders but that simply is not the case.
The Trade Union movement in this country can trace it roots to women’s activism, Google Annie Beasant and the Bryant and May match factory strikes. It was women in Glasgow who campaigned for lower rents and fair access to housing in the First World War in that city. More up to date the Greemham Common Peace movement, and the 1984 Miner’s Strike saw women active in those struggles; at the forefront. Even more contemporary, women are active at community levels from local governement to youth work, you name it! The danger, I suppose is to ignore achievements and marginalise women’s contributions., but that one is not new either. Please do not fall into the sexist trap of judging all women’s ability to lead by naming one or two female leaders who may or may not have made the grade in subjective opinion. For example, Thatcher or Harman…no man has ever suggested that men must be crap leaders because everyone from Ghengis Khan to Mussolini, or Hitler to Robert Mugabe are terrible examples of worl d leaders! That would be seen as stupid! lol But you think Thatcher was rubbish, ergo all women must make rubbish leaders!
Women should be encouraged to become more active in their communities at a multiplicity of levels simply because we have a long proud tradition of being successful!
