About Economic Development

How did the economic development affect politics in MA and VA in colonial times?

I have to write an essay about this, and I am totally not sure.
How did they even develop economically? Or politically? If you have any ideas, or any place I could find this information, any help would be appreciated.

Massachusetts developed as a Puritan “city upon a hill” (John Winthrop-1st Governor) centered around congregationalism. The idea that the colony was placed above the individual. The loose government was centered around a group of ‘leaders’ elected by popular vote by the people. Although not a theocracy, the government was highly influenced by the ‘visible saints’ of the Puritan church. Visible saints were those who had gone through the conversion process and were ‘accepted’ by god. Mainly families migrated to the colony and it developed quickly and efficiently with much less disease than normal. The nuclear family was the center of the household and family ties were established quickly. The main economic growth was a market economy based around merchants and trade through ships. However, the economy struggled once salutary neglect ended and the navigation acts were enforced. (setting an important precedent for the American Revolution)

Virginia on the other hand developed slowly. It was established mainly by single men who had lost out on their inheritance or were looking for a quick way to get rich. They came in search of gold, but found little to none. The true wealth didn’t come until John Rolfe (the husband of Pochantas) returned from the indian tribe with a way to effectively grow tobacco. Tobacco quickly became a cash crop and anyone with land was growing it. Due to this however a feudalistic society emerged in which the wealthy planters dominated over the poor farmers and indentured servants. The government was the House of Burguesses and was elected by popular vote however their was a land requirement in order to be able to vote. The colony developed slowly, and it wasn’t until the Great Migration when the First Families of Virginia came over that the colony began to self populate and expand. Disease also plagued it in early years.

Hopefully that answered you question. I’m in AP US History so trust me all this info is true. You just need to look up dates and stuff now. good luck on your paper!
