Characteristics Of Economic Development

RENAISSANCE QUESTION!?

“The major characteristic in the development of the ‘new monarchies’ was the expansion of central government authority in the areas of economic, political, judicial, military, and religious policy.” Is this a valid statement in regard to England, Spain, and France? Was the pattern of political development the same in Eastern Europe?
Thank you so much, Bill.

I don’t know exactly what you are speaking of, but if you are going into the nationalization of France and Spain, which took place over a couple of hundred years going into the Renaissance, you would be basically correct. What that consisted of was really giving the kings of those countries more control and wresting it from the papacy. The same thing did not take place in England, the country was already unified quite a bit. But France, for instance, was made up of provinces which were unified under a series of Henry’s and Louis’. Spain did the same thing under Isabella and Ferdinand, but remained more under the control of the church. Henry VIII simply kicked the Papacy out of England for all intents and purposes.

I call this part of the Reformation, but I look at the Reformation much differently than many others who think it was only a religious movement. It was also a governmental movement in the states that you mentioned, but the unification of Germany and Italy would not take place until the later have of the 19th century.
