Developing A Communications Strategy
How can I help my wife to communicate with me about problems in the relationship?
We’ve been married 6 months, and every time she starts to experience something that’s emotionally difficult for her, she shuts down, and isolates herself from me, a coping strategy she developed in childhood against her controlling and intrusive mother. It’s not that she doesn’t want to resolve the problems, but she feels that she can’t somehow. I don’t understand this, and nothing I’ve done seems to help her open up to me. Compounding this is that when communication is down because of one problem, it’s down for everything. What can I do to kickstart communication?
Suggest she write down her issues and then discusses them with you later. It will take awhile to reprograme her brain but keep being patient and understanding – it will come. Congratulations on your marriage.
