Just as individuals have basic human needs to function, relationships provide individuals with emotional, security, physical, social and educational needs. The family is the primary source of support for individuals when they deal with problems in their everyday lives. Some families have outside and financial resources to help them with their problems, while many others do not.Often times, when problems arise in a family or with a relationship arise, it is from a lack of communication or listening. Social workers see the family unit as the basis for human growth and development, as well as giving support. They engage families in the helping process which can help individuals change.The family must be supported and strengthened because it is essential and contributes to our well-being. Above all, our family relationships enables us to learn from each other, develop and grow and live more productive and meaningful lives.
Observation, the family as a unit are not going to be primary to assessment, a good percentage of your cases are going to be with single parents or families with intermittent contact with father, or replacement step parent.
Don’t focus your argument on family unity. Your analysis should not be restricted to the “normal” family collective you will rarely see it, refocus on what ever structure is in place, sees their fundamental role as one that places the child first, whether that be a single mum, grandparent etc.
