I think we have to be careful here unless we appear elitist !
Developing the arguement further the Republic of Greater London has as its economic hinterland not just UKML (UK minus London) but the EU and increasingly the rest of the world. RGL like GNE attracts the brightest people from accross the world – RGL is more cosmopolitan for historic, geographic and cultural reasons.
RGL and GNE would initially be business, financial, cultural, academic and artistic centres with all the synergy deriving from that. They would not waste their time on geopolitical grandstanding like invading Iraq. But at the end of the day power is power.
GNE has the advantage that the political capital is already seperate from the Global City. Here is an opportunity to really boost regional development in England – think Brasilia – how about somewhere central like Swindon ?
I suggest the Alliance of Anglosphere Global Cities (AAGC) as a name.
