Economic Development Projects

has the media done a poor job on showing the real economy?

they for the last year have had a more or less doom and gloom view on the economy , they just about tried to talk us into a depression last winter , then they settled for a recession . i think they do a poor job of showing the real economy , i mean its not that bad , people are still working , sure un-employment is near 8-10 in some places but that still means 90% of workers are working and keeping busy on things like economic development projects .

so anyways what do you think about the media’s view of the economy ?

The media blowing issues out of proportion is nothing new; as the old television news axiom goes, if it bleeds, it leads. Bad news, particularly news as universal as signs of economic downturn, affects a large share of its target audience. Thus, more people are prone to consume news when they feel it has a particular appeal to them on a personal level. People share the same general fears: loss of life and limb, loss of property, loss of liberties, loss of cultural or societal figures or icons. An economic downturn fits the bill absolutely.

That said, it’s bad. Numbers don’t lie. Certain sectors, like retail, were absolutely decimated, and their numbers in regards to unemployment and lost earnings were actually mitigated in national figures by sectors whose losses weren’t as drastic. The “real” economy is still bad.
