Overstock.com turning to software development
Citing the need to implement innovative business-critical solutions, Overstock.com recently announced it will open a software development center early next year in Utah County, Utah.
To ensure the project has the resources – both financial and human – it needs to succeed, Overstock.com stated it will bring in 150 new IT professionals – at least 100 of whom will be hired at some point in 2011. Based on the company’s statement, it appears as though the development center will be in Provo, Utah.
“We are expanding our tech presence in Utah and actively recruiting,” said Overstock.com president Jonathan Johnson. “We have more innovation in the pipeline than we have developers. Utah is home to many incredible technologists, and this new office gives us access to more of them. Overstock.com is pleased with the incentives that the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the City of Provo offered because it made a difference in our ability to continue to grow our business in Utah by opening this new facility.”
While no specific projects were mentioned, Overstock.com’s presence as a leader in retail and consumers ecommerce makes it necessary that the company have the capability to implement and develop solutions that help customers and internal processes, such as inventory control, human resource management and data management. While many organizations opt to purchase solutions designed to handle these tasks – or outsource the responsibility entirely – filling the office with software development specialists will enable Overstock.com to manage solutions properly and create its own as they see fit.
Overstock.com’s success in Utah is partially responsible for the decision to open the development center. The company currently operates four facilities in Utah and employs more than 1,500 people.
While the company makes no mention of agile development or any other method in its release, using agile development would enable it to maximize its resources in the early stages of the development center. Furthermore, as the agile software development process can take some time for teams to master, implementing it ensures the employees fully understand their roles as the center becomes entirely operational.
The move also represents growth for the company, as it has become one of the most successful ecommerce organizations in recent years. It has claimed distinctions from the National Retail Federation and American Express at several points since its founding in 2002.
