Phd Development Economics

Why India does not produce even One NOBEL LAUREATE in Science/ Economics at least every Ten years?

We talk of 9% growth, and our Universities churn Graduates/ M.Techs/ Phd’s to work for so-called multi-national IT companies etc. But alas! Neither do we have any REAL SCIENTISTS who have significantly contributed to the scientific community nor do we have any REAL ENGINEERS / TECHNOLOGISTS, who could answer our problems. We have very poor infrastructure; our villagers do not have potable drinking water; our health index is even below that of Bangladesh… All these are indicators that our development in Science, Technology and Engineering are very low – if not NIL. What are the REAL REASONS? Any body..? Instead we seem to be “ALSO RANS” mimicking the Western Economic Model. Our so-called Scientists are mere Government Employees, constrained to work in an environment alien to the development of Science. But, it is strange that we have over 500 special Science/ technology/ University/ Industrial Research & Development centers – most of which do not have anything to offer to the World

i dont know very many indians in the academia other than one famous columbia eonomics proffesor, jagdish baghwati. and are academics who win the nobel… others are poets and pacifists of course. like u say, most capable indians seem to be flying to those multinational it firms to make good bucks. also, india does not have money to pour into research grants and all… which the us can afford for its academics. if i was indian id care more about the problems u list rather than the nobel. we have 2 nobels in chile and i just dont care –havent read any of their poems and wont cuz i just dont care. but ive been to many parts in india and it really needs some development to be done.
