The Maya women and men have managed to adjust the birth rate to accommodate the decrease in infant mortality. They have managed to keep their culture alive, although the indigenous languages are less likely to be spoken by their children.

The Maya have managed to develop a tourist economy in some parts of the country, in spite of the best efforts of the government. The richest 1% of the population is now trying to interrupt the flow of foreign currency from the tourists to the Maya people.

Rampant government corruption continues to impede foreign investment.

World coffee prices have fallen below the cost of production in Guatemala.

The richest 1% of the population has managed to increase its land holdings to 70% of the country. Their decision to grow crops only for for export insures that the country will be unable to feed itself for the forseeable future, in spite of an abundance of good agricultural land.
